Pornography on the Internet
Pornography on the Internet can appear unintentionally through:
•         Innocent, imprecise, misdirected searches.  A student may accidentally enter a pornographic site
•         Stealth sites and misleading website addresses can appear when a search for official site  such as www.whitehouse.gov could lead to the porn site www.whitehouse.com  if not typed correctly
•         Chat messages from online predators contain pornographic content
•         Unsolicited junk e-mail

If your child is sent inappropriate material by someone he or she met online or inadvertently encountered inappropriate material these are types of child sexual exploitation.  Make a report at www.CyberTipline.com  or the calling 1.800.THE.LOST to help fight against child sexual exploitation.

Common Parent Questions about Pornography
How did my student get these pictures?
How did they find the pornographic web site?
Can I search my computer to find where my child has been?
Is there a way to prevent my child from talking to a pedophile online?

Most students know how to use a search engine as they were taught in school.  Say you are a twelve or thirteen year-old boy and you want to see photographs of nude girls.  You do not know the address for those pictures on the internet but you can use the search engine.  You type in “nude girls”.   The search engine searches the Internet for sites featuring nude girls.  With one search engine, the result would be just over ninety-eight thousand sites, each site containing between one and one thousand pictures for viewing for free.  All search engines will produce similar results

Once a site is located, your student can view any of the free photographs and they also can be saved or downloaded to your computer.  This method and items sent via e-mail is how most of the pictures or graphic images get to the student’s computer.

REAL LIFE STORIES

Story # 1 A local law enforcement official related a story concerning his 8 year old son.

On the way home from school the 8 year old told his mother he wanted to work on homework on the computer and didn’t want her to come into the room where the computer was.  Thinking this was unusual she did, naturally, find an opportunity to see what he was doing on the computer.  A friend at school told him to Google “hot girls”.  Luckily the “hot girls” were clothed, but certainly could have turned out much differently.

Story # 2 From a small area high school

I have had some concerns about students searching images for inappropriate content.  I do not think that parents have any idea as to how easy it is to “stumble” across this.  Another concern is the fantasy baseball, basketball, etc.  The kids really get into this, but what about the betting that is going on.  Do the parents know this?
