Basic Safety Tips

Basic Safety Tips for the Internet

  1. Place your computer in an open room with the monitor facing out.  This allows you to see and control what is occurring on the Internet
  2. Be involved and take an active interest in your student’s online activitities
  3. Educate your children NEVER to give their name, address or phone number of ANY personal information about them or their family online
  4. Teach your children NEVER to meet with someone they meet on the web
Additional Tips
  1. Educate your children about the potential dangers that predators and con-artists are experts at accumulating incremental amounts of person data until they eventually obtain enough information to locate a user.
  2. Warn your child that identity is easily concealed online and that people may not be who they claim to be.  An online “friend” who claims to be the same age as your child may in fact be an adult in search of a child victim
  3. Students may know more about technology but parents know more about life.  Agree both can learn from each other and guide them toward making good decisions in the use of this wonderful technology
  4. Bookmark child-friendly web sites.  This allows your children to easily get to safe sites that they have used before
  5. Share your Internet child safety experiences, both good and bad with others
  6. Don’t install Peer-to-peer applications.  A high percentage of what occurs with children and P2P applications is related to either illegal or immoral activities
  7. Teach students to crash and tell.  If they encounter a bad experience, they should feel comfortable in immediately turning off the computer and talking with a parent about the experience
