- View your credit report every year
- Equifax 800-685-1111
- Experian 888-397-3742
- Trans Union 877-322-8228
- Never have your Social Security Number printed on your checks.
- Consider putting your first initial and last name on your preprinted checks the next time you order.
- Consider not signing the back of your credit cards. Instead, write the words ‘PHOTO ID REQUIRED”
- Memorize your PIN. Do not write your PIN on your card or carry it in your wallet or purse.
- Consider not writing your complete account number on your check when paying your credit card bill. Instead, just write the last four numbers.
- Consider dropping bill payments in a Postal Service collection box instead of your unlocked mailbox.
- Photocopy all the contents in your wallet. Photocopy both sides on your driver’s license, credit cards, etc. and keep them in a safe place. If you lose your wallet, you’ll have all account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel.
- Never provide important information over the phone or on the Internet. Don’t give out information unless you know the party whom you are dealing with.
- Do not carry your Social Security card, passport or birth certificate unless needed that day.
- Shred confidential information. Shred pre-approved credit card offers and receipts or other personal information that link your name to account numbers.
- Review your back and billing statements each month to ensure that you have not been billed for fraudulent purchases. If you spot any suspicious transactions or charges, contact the bank or card issuer immediately.
It is impossible to guarantee that you will never become a victim of financial fraud. Following these simple steps can help protect you.
